African Countries with the Fastest Internet Speeds

February 20, 2023by George Adjei0

The development and expansion of many African nations’ economies now heavily rely on the internet.

Fast and dependable internet connectivity has become more crucial than ever with the growth of e-commerce, online learning, and remote work. This article explores the most recent Ookla report on the African nations with the fastest internet speeds in this post.

Rwanda made the highest improvement in fixed broadband speeds, jumping up 47 places in the world rankings, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index. The report credits the nation’s significant investments in network infrastructure, the deregulation of the telecoms industry, and the rollout of fiber optic networks to homes and businesses for this accomplishment.

Other African nations besides Rwanda have seen a considerable increase in internet speed. Djibouti and Congo both rose by seven positions, Malawi all advanced by nine positions, while Mauritius, Lesotho, and Guinea all went up by five. The biggest improvement in mobile internet speeds was made by Burkina Faso, which rose 22 spots. Botswana and Uganda both made gains of 15 spots each.

The report stresses the relevance of investing in network infrastructure to increase internet speeds in Africa. One of the biggest telecom companies in Africa, MTN, for instance, invested over $1 billion in network expansion and secured 4G and 5G spectrum in major countries, which resulted in an average 22.5 percent drop in data costs.

The report noted that increased competition brought about by the liberalization of the telecoms industry, as observed in Rwanda, has led to better services and reduced costs. Likewise, the availability of high-speed internet has increased as a result of the rollout of fiber optic networks to homes and businesses.
