On Wednesday, President Yoweri Museveni said that he recently discussed food security in Africa with his counterpart from Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
At a press conference for the investment forum between Uganda and South Africa in Pretoria, Mr. Museveni was answering questions from the media.
“Our talks were exploratory… but what I told him was that Uganda has no food problem… but this is not the case with other countries… so still the problem remains,” he said during the press conference aired by South Africa’s state-run television SABC.
“But I wanted him to know that there are some African countries which are strong economically.”
On February 22, the two presidents spoke over the phone about the possibility of advancing their bilateral relations.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February of last year, the cost of fuel and food has soared all across the world.
The two nations, which together export roughly 29% of the world’s wheat, are a major source of food for Africa.
Regarding the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Uganda has remained neutral.
A UN resolution demanding that Russia halt hostilities in Ukraine and withdraw its military saw Uganda abstain the day following Mr. Museveni’s phone call to Mr. Zelensky.
